LPN Employment Opportunities – Decide on the Right One for You
The most recent statistics show that over 750 thousand licensed practical nurses hold jobs. It is expected for this number to increase by over 20% in the coming years. This means that the LPN employment opportunities will grow substantially. You should definitely look at each of the main options and choose the one that suits you best.
Many of the licensed practical nurses work in nursing care facilities. The work there involves more patient care and the performance of basic tasks, such as taking the patient’s blood pressure and temperature. The work environment is not hectic, but even if you work part-time you can expect to give night, weekend and holiday shifts, since patients need round the clock care.
The LPN employment opportunities in residential care facilities and community care facilities are fewer at present, but the number of vacancies is projected to increase dramatically. The work at these places is similar to the one in nursing care facilities. Still, most people there will not need that amount of personal care and constant monitoring. The work schedule should also be similar to the traditional one.
After completing their LPN training around one quarter of all LPNs work in hospitals. The work there is often more hectic, but this will depend on the ward you are working in. Hospital nurses usually have a wider array of job duties involving not only patient care and monitoring, but also performing basic lab tests and assisting doctors and registered nurses. The work schedule is usually standard and fits a 40-hour work week.
The LPN employment opportunities in physicians’ offices and clinics are fewer, but you can still find a great job, if you search hard enough. The work usually involves assisting doctors in making medical exams. The clerical duties of LPNs in such positions are also many. Generally, the work is not overly demanding and hectic. You can expect a work schedule from 9 to 5.
